August 26, 2025:
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced on Sunday, August 24, that the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) has leased four bighas of land in Colaba to the Assam government for a period of 60 years. The land will be utilised to develop key public infrastructure in healthcare, education, social welfare, and entrepreneurship.
The decision followed a written request from the Assam Chief Secretary to the Union Ministry, seeking land allocation in Mumbai for the state’s long-term institutional and community needs.
Describing the move as a “people-first initiative,” Sonowal said: “By making this land available to the Government of Assam for 60 years, we are enabling the creation of critical infrastructure that will serve generations to come. Located at the heart of Mumbai in Colaba, this will help fulfil a longstanding aspiration of the people of Assam to have a centre in Mumbai catering to their needs — whether for patients, students, or entrepreneurs.”
Sonowal further confirmed that he had spoken with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who welcomed the decision and called it “a vital contribution to Assam’s growth story.”
Officials stated that development plans for the site are currently under review. However, the focus is expected to remain on high-utility facilities such as hospitals, educational institutions, social service centres, and incubation hubs to support entrepreneurship. The long-term lease allows the Assam government the flexibility to design and execute projects in a sustainable manner.
The allocation of land in Colaba, one of Mumbai’s most prominent and well-connected localities, is being seen as a strategic advantage for Assam. It will not only provide access to opportunities in India’s financial capital but also ensure better support for the Assamese community living in the city.
