August 30, 2025: Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has announced plans to establish a second major hospital in Mumbai. Chairperson Nita Ambani revealed the project at RIL’s annual shareholder meeting on Friday, describing it as a 2,000-bed medical facility located in the heart of the city, which will also include a medical college.
At present, the foundation manages the Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital (SHNRFH) in Girgaum, which it took over in 2006. Ambani further disclosed that SHNRFH will soon open a new extension focused on chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, significantly enhancing its oncology care.
The announcement comes amid growing private sector investment in healthcare infrastructure in Mumbai. Earlier this year, in February, the Adani Group unveiled plans to develop a 1,000-bed private hospital along with a medical college in Kandivli.
The new Reliance Foundation hospital is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s medical ecosystem, offering advanced healthcare services, medical education, and expanded capacity to meet rising demand. With its scale and planned specialisations, it aims to become one of the city’s landmark healthcare institutions, complementing existing facilities while addressing the challenges of accessibility and modern medical training.
