September 9, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced work on installing bio-toilets along the recently opened Coastal Road promenade. Six units are planned in total, with the first being constructed at Worli Sea Face. Additional facilities will follow at Haji Ali, Worli near Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk, and Mahalaxmi, while two further locations are yet to be confirmed.
As the promenade does not have a sewer line network, the toilets are being designed with septic tank–based bio-systems. Some of the units will also be located near the Public Underpass (PUP), which links pedestrians from the arterial road directly to the promenade.
A senior BMC official confirmed that construction at Worli Sea Face is already under way. “It should take about a week to open one of the bio-toilets at Worli. We are also in the process of finalising the other two locations,” the official said. The proposal to introduce bio-toilets was first raised in June, when the Coastal Road department was completing the last phase of the promenade works. By July, the department had written to the solid waste management division, requesting that toilets be arranged at four locations, with designs that would blend aesthetically with the surroundings.
Local residents, while welcoming the decision, stressed the need for better waste management on the promenade. With visitor numbers steadily rising and expected to surge further after the monsoon, many have called for additional garbage bins. “People are coming with food and celebrating in groups, but there are not enough garbage bins,” said Kavita Chawla, a Breach Candy resident. “If this continues, we will soon face a rodent problem. There is an urgent need to add more dustbins.”
The civic body is expected to complete the installation of the first unit at Worli within a week, before extending the facilities across other designated sites.
