September 12, 2025: Mumbai’s iconic Mahalaxmi Racecourse is set for a major transformation, with 120 acres of the site earmarked for conversion into a vast green public space modelled on New York’s Central Park. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde revealed the plan in a recent interaction with the Indian Express.
“After assuming office as Chief Minister, I proposed to the civic administration the idea of turning the Mahalaxmi grounds into a world-class central park. The vision is to make this place truly accessible for Mumbaikars, offering them a much-needed respite in a fast-paced city,” Shinde said.
The racecourse, spread over 211 to 212 acres, is jointly owned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government. The lease, which had expired in 2024, has since been renewed. While 91 acres remain under lease to the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) for racing activities until 2053, the remaining 120 acres have been allocated to the BMC for public use.
Shinde also announced plans to link the upcoming park with the city’s 170-acre open space created by the coastal road project. “We will connect the two areas through an underground tunnel, giving Mumbaikars access to nearly 300 acres of continuous open space at one go,” he said.
The proposed park will feature landscaped pathways, walking tracks, sitting zones and dedicated cycling lanes. The development aims to blend leisure, fitness, and cultural activities while preserving open green stretches in the heart of the city.
Meanwhile, the BMC has already been generating revenue from the land. The civic body earns nearly Rs 7.5 crore annually by renting out the 120-acre plot for high-profile events, including Lollapalooza India, Guns N’ Roses concerts, and equestrian shows.
