BMC To Begin Full Construction Of Bhandup Road Over Bridge In October

September 15, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will commence full-scale construction of a new Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Bhandup this October. Estimated at 129.43 crore, the project aims to provide a crucial east–west link and significantly ease traffic congestion in the locality.

At present, residents of Bhandup depend on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and the Andheri-Goregaon Link Road (AGLR) to travel between the eastern and western suburbs. These two arterial routes, located about five kilometres apart, experience daily bottlenecks. Until the early 2000s, a level crossing near Bhandup station offered a shorter route, but it was closed to vehicles, leading to long-standing demands for an alternative connection.

According to civic officials, the new ROB will extend 529.53 metres, comprising 233.50 metres on the eastern side, 207.30 metres on the western side, and an 89-metre stretch across the railway tracks. The bridge will feature three lanes, with a width of 11.50 metres on the BMC-maintained sections and 15.60 metres across the railway span. The structure will include 14 spans in total — seven on the eastern side, five on the western, and two above the tracks.

Work on the western portion has already begun with pier foundation activity. On the eastern side, progress awaits clearance of encroachments, tree relocations, and permissions concerning salt pan land. Meanwhile, the Railways is reviewing the General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) before construction across the tracks can proceed.

The BMC has projected completion of the ROB by early 2027. Once operational, the bridge is expected to halve travel time for commuters and reduce the heavy load on JVLR and AGLR. Together with the recently inaugurated Vikhroli bridge, the Bhandup ROB is set to enhance east–west connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
