NHSRCL Advances Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train With Major Track Works Contract

September 18, 2025: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has finalised a major contract with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the execution of track works on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. The agreement entrusts L&T with the design, supply, construction, testing and commissioning of tracks across a 157-kilometre stretch from Mumbai to Zaroli village, on the Maharashtra–Gujarat border. The scope of work also includes the construction of four stations and a rolling stock depot at Thane.

The Maharashtra section covers 156 km, of which 135 km will be elevated between Shilphata and Zaroli. Within this stretch, 103 km will be built using 2,575 full-span pre-stressed concrete (PSC) box girders, each weighing approximately 970 tonnes. In addition, the project entails 17 km of segmental girders, 2.3 km of steel bridges, and seven tunnels with a combined length of nearly 6 km.

Construction of elevated stations at Thane, Virar and Boisar is currently under way, with slab casting initiated at Virar and Boisar. Progress has also been recorded in Palghar district, where excavation has begun on the seven mountain tunnels, with 2.1 km already completed. To accelerate works, 13 casting yards have been established, five of which are operational.

The construction strategy in Maharashtra mirrors the approach successfully adopted in Gujarat, where 319 km of viaducts have already been delivered since April 2021. A significant milestone was recently achieved at Sakhare village in Dahanu with the launch of the first 40-metre full-span PSC box girder, highlighting the coordinated pace of execution.

With steady progress across multiple fronts, officials remain confident that the bullet train project will meet its operational targets, ultimately transforming connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad through India’s first high-speed rail corridor.
