September 18, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the final leg of Mumbai’s underground Metro Line 3 corridor — from Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli to Cuffe Parade — on September 30, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed on Tuesday. On the same day, Modi is also scheduled to open the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a much-anticipated project expected to significantly reduce congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Speaking at the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Melava held at the NSCI Dome in Worli, Fadnavis asserted that the Mahayuti government was delivering infrastructure “at a scale unseen before”. He contrasted this with the 15-year tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), during which, he said, “only 11km of Metro was inaugurated”. Under the current government, 354km of Metro routes are expected to become operational.
Metro Line 3 is Mumbai’s first fully underground corridor, stretching 33.5km from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR. It has been opened in stages: the Aarey–BKC section began operations in October 2024, followed by the BKC–Acharya Atre Chowk stretch in May 2025. With the upcoming opening of the Worli–Cuffe Parade link, south Mumbai’s business hub will gain direct connectivity to BKC and beyond, promising shorter commutes and reduced congestion.
Fadnavis also spoke on the Dharavi redevelopment scheme, dubbed the world’s largest slum rehabilitation project. He reiterated that around one million residents would be rehoused within Dharavi, with even those deemed technically ineligible receiving protection. Small industries would also be formalised and given tax exemptions for five years.
Targeting the opposition, the Chief Minister accused the Thackeray brothers of prioritising power over development, while BJP city president Ameet Satam alleged that Shiv Sena (UBT) had misappropriated nearly ₹3 lakh crore of BMC funds over three decades.
