September 25, 2025: The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC), in collaboration with Central and Western Railways, has launched a detailed feasibility study to examine the possibility of converting key suburban rail corridors in South Mumbai into underground networks. The move aims to modernise ageing infrastructure, decongest the city’s busiest zones, unlock high-value railway land, and improve integration with other modes of transport.
On the Western Railway side, MRVC has proposed converting the Churchgate–Mumbai Central stretch, approximately 5 km, into an underground corridor. The alignment would resurface near Mumbai Central. For Central Railway, a study is underway to add two suburban lines between CSMT and Parel, covering around 8 km. Options under review include underground, elevated, at-grade, or hybrid alignments.
The plan is to restrict construction within railway-owned land to avoid private land acquisition and minimise displacement. The feasibility study also includes creating a major interchange hub at Byculla, which could significantly boost connectivity across Mumbai’s transport networks.
Consultants will evaluate multiple objectives, including freeing up prime railway land for redevelopment, enhancing operational efficiency by allowing faster and more frequent services, and alleviating congestion on surface lines. Integration with the Metro, BEST buses, and long-distance rail is a key priority. Global benchmarks from cities like London, New York, and Tokyo will guide the approach.
Technically, the study will assess possible alignments, station placements, and tunnel designs, weighing options like twin-bore versus single-bore systems. Construction complexity, safety, and financial viability will be key considerations, with a cost-benefit analysis integral to the review.
If realised, MRVC’s initiative could reshape South Mumbai’s suburban rail spine, benefiting millions of commuters daily while also unlocking valuable land and transforming the city’s transport infrastructure.
