BMC To Form Landscaping Committee For Coastal Road Beautification Project

October 9, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to establish a dedicated ‘Landscaping Committee’ to evaluate and approve the design report submitted by Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) for the beautification of 53 hectares of reclaimed land along the Mumbai Coastal Road. The committee will also act as a single-window facilitator, ensuring that all necessary permissions for landscaping and greening works are obtained seamlessly and at no cost.

The Coastal Road, a 10.58-km, eight-lane expressway connecting Marine Drive to Worli and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), has been open to traffic 24/7 since August 15. Currently, 5.25 km of the planned 7.5-km promenade and accompanying pedestrian underpasses are operational, providing improved accessibility and recreational spaces for commuters and pedestrians alike.

RIL was among five companies that responded to the BMC’s Expression of Interest (EOI) to develop the 53-hectare open space under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The company will be responsible for maintaining the gardens, promenade, and pedestrian underpasses for the next 30 years. The proposal recently received final approval from Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

A senior civic official stated, “With administrative approval in place, a Landscaping Committee will soon be formed to approve the design and serve as a single-window facilitator for obtaining all necessary permissions for the landscaping works.”

The Rs 400-crore project will cover the development and upkeep of gardens, parks, cycle and pedestrian paths, along with infrastructure maintenance including sewage treatment plants, lighting, CCTV, signage, and public utilities. Sustainable practices for water conservation and environmental protection are integral to the project.
