November 03, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a comprehensive action plan for the revival of 10 lakes in Malad, six months after Union Minister and Mumbai North MP Piyush Goyal announced their rejuvenation. The detailed study — spanning four months of surveys, water quality testing, and field assessments — identifies key interventions to restore the lakes’ ecological balance and community value.
BMC officials presented the findings to Goyal on Sunday. He said the lakes would be rejuvenated through desilting, cleaning, and beautification under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with implementing agencies required to secure civic approval and donor support estimated between Rs 3 crore and Rs 5 crore per lake.
Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar stated, “The study revealed stark contrasts in the health of 10 lakes across Malad and Madh, pointing towards ecological and social interventions needed to revive them.”
Each lake has been evaluated based on ecological condition, community engagement, and infrastructure needs.
Karjaidevi Talao (Manori) faces moderate risks of nutrient and coliform contamination, but has strong local participation. Proposed works include desilting, greening, and the installation of water sensors, estimated at Rs 1.5 crore.
Kamal Talao (Marve Road) showed high nutrient levels, prompting recommendations for a compact sewage treatment plant, drain interception, and public education at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
Harbadevi Talao (Madh) requires litter clearance and safety upgrades, while Vanala Talao showed strong community use.
Other lakes, such as Ali Talao, Dharavli Talao, Sumlai Talao, and Erangal Talao, were found to need targeted awareness, waste management, and structural improvements.
The initiative, jointly implemented by Project Mumbai, Studio Piplikup, and SIES College, with donor funding, marks a major step toward sustainable lake management in Mumbai’s western suburbs.
