November 05, 2025: In a bid to enhance public safety and protect city assets, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon bring Mumbai’s parks and playgrounds under CCTV surveillance. The initiative, led by the Garden Department, will begin as a pilot project in select recreational spaces across the city.
Mumbai has more than 300 recreation grounds and 400 playgrounds, serving as crucial green spaces amid the city’s dense urban landscape. However, many of these public areas suffer from poor maintenance, inadequate infrastructure, and frequent incidents of vandalism and theft. Limited lighting and the absence of adequate security have also raised concerns about safety, especially during evening hours.
Currently, caretakers and private security guards are stationed at some locations, but officials admit that these measures alone have not been sufficient to deter damage or ensure security. In light of this, the Mumbai Police recently recommended that the civic body install CCTV cameras and improve lighting across parks and playgrounds to enhance vigilance and deter unlawful activities.
Acting on this advice, the BMC Garden Department has initiated a feasibility study to identify priority locations for surveillance installation. A senior civic official said the plan will be implemented in phases once technical assessments are completed.
“The CCTV footage will help law enforcement investigate and prevent crimes in these public areas, making parks and playgrounds safer for everyone,” he added.
The BMC believes that integrating surveillance with better lighting and regular maintenance will not only improve safety but also encourage more citizens to use these spaces for recreation, fitness, and community activities.
