November 06, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched ward-level inspections across Mumbai to ensure that construction sites comply with its 28-point environmental guidelines aimed at curbing air pollution. The inspections focus mainly on verifying the installation of Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors that track dust and emissions from ongoing construction activity.
According to civic officials, inspections are being conducted regularly, and notices are issued to developers failing to meet the prescribed standards. In September alone, the BMC served 314 notices to construction sites — 275 show-cause notices and 39 stop-work orders. “The enforcement process is continuous, and ward-level squads will keep visiting the sites to monitor adherence,” said a civic official. Notices have also been sent to developers who have yet to install AQI monitors as mandated.
The BMC had introduced similar measures in late 2023 to tackle air and dust pollution arising from large-scale construction activity. The latest enforcement drive builds on those efforts by introducing a more structured monitoring mechanism through designated squads. In addition to checking AQI monitors, officials are also examining on-ground dust control practices such as regular water sprinkling, debris covering, and the use of barriers to contain particulate matter.
Civic authorities believe that the initiative will help improve compliance, promote accountability, and lead to a gradual improvement in Mumbai’s air quality amid the ongoing construction boom. Developers have been warned that repeated non-compliance could result in prolonged work stoppages or penalties under the Environment Protection Act.
The BMC’s renewed vigilance underscores its growing focus on balancing urban development with environmental sustainability, especially as Mumbai continues to witness rapid infrastructure and real estate growth.
