Mumbai Metro Opens 68,000 Sq Ft Of Retail Space For Startups And Small Businesses

November 10, 2025: Mumbai’s metro network is evolving into more than just a transit system — it’s becoming a platform for entrepreneurship. The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) has invited applications from entrepreneurs and small business owners to lease commercial spaces within metro stations, aiming to turn transit areas into vibrant communities and business hubs.

The initiative covers Metro Line 2A (Andheri West–Dahisar East) and Metro Line 7 (Gundavali–Dahisar East), offering 472 kiosks, 25 commercial blocks, and a total of over 68,000 sq ft of leasable retail space. According to officials, this marks one of the largest retail expansions within an Indian urban transport network. The programme aims to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) establish a presence in high-footfall areas at affordable rates. Businesses such as cafés, bakeries, pharmacies, bookstores, and service outlets are encouraged to participate. To support small operators, turnover-sharing requirements have been waived for single-kiosk licensees.

“This initiative aligns with our goal to make metro stations more people-centric by integrating mobility with commerce,” an MMMOCL official said. “It’s about turning travel corridors into community spaces where convenience, business, and sustainability intersect.”

Urban experts highlight that such initiatives are reshaping transport infrastructure into engines of local economic growth. They add that metro-linked retail not only enhances commuter experience but also contributes to non-fare revenue and improves station safety. “Metro-linked retail promotes walkable, mixed-use environments and reduces the need for additional travel for daily needs,” said an urban development expert.

Officials noted that the initiative supports the state government’s ongoing efforts to integrate multiple metro systems under unified management for smoother operations and commuter convenience. Entrepreneurs can submit applications via mahatenders.gov.in until 6 PM on November 15.

By blending transport and trade, Mumbai Metro is redefining urban mobility — fostering innovation, accessibility, and sustainable economic growth.
