November 13, 2025: The construction of the new multi-speciality building at Mumbai’s iconic Sir JJ Hospital has reached its final phase, bringing the project closer to transforming the hospital into a modern medical hub. The state-of-the-art complex consists of four interconnected blocks—A, B, C, and D—spanning two basement levels, a ground floor, and ten upper floors. The entire facility is slated for handover by December 2025. “We should be able to start patient care at this new facility by mid-next year,” said Dr Ajay Bhandarwar, Dean of Sir JJ Hospital.
Construction Status
Blocks A, B, and C have completed reinforced cement concrete (RCC) work, with painting, plumbing, electrical fittings, and fire safety systems currently underway. Lift rooms and overhead water tanks are also being installed. Block D has completed its 10th floor and terrace slab, with lift room and water tank installation along with interior finishing in progress.
Facilities Overview
Blocks A and B are designated for patient care, featuring OPDs on the ground and first three floors, seven ICUs on the 4th and 5th floors, and inpatient wards and nursing rooms from the 6th to 10th floors. Blocks C and D will house diagnostics and surgical services, including an advanced cardiac cath lab, specialised units for endoscopy, dialysis, and chemotherapy, 22 fully modular operation theatres with pre- and post-operative rooms, and a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
Basement Levels
Basement 1 will accommodate parking, engineering support, mortuary, staff change areas, central store, receiving bay, and waste management zones. Basement 2 will host an underground water tank, pump room, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy departments, along with parking for 350 cars.
Additional facilities include reception and lobby areas, a rehabilitation centre, kitchen and dining spaces, blood bank, pharmacy, laboratory, imaging, emergency departments, two auditoriums for academic sessions, and dedicated medical records and administrative offices.
Once operational, the new JJ Hospital complex is expected to significantly enhance patient care, diagnostic services, and medical education in Mumbai, marking a milestone in the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
