November 13, 2025: Construction of the highly anticipated Kharghar Coastal Road, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), is set to begin in early 2026 after obtaining the necessary forest clearances.
Planned by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the 9.68-kilometre, 30-metre-wide arterial road will link the airport with major nodes, including Belapur and Nerul, enhancing regional mobility and stimulating economic growth across Navi Mumbai. The corridor will also provide direct connectivity to the International Corporate Park (ICP)—modeled on Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)—as well as to the Golf Course and the FIFA-standard Centre of Excellence (COE) at Kharghar.
A grade-separated interchange over the Sion–Panvel Expressway is included in the design to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion between the airport and surrounding commercial and recreational hubs. Of the total length, 6.96 kilometres will be newly developed, while the remainder will integrate with existing road networks. The road is also expected to support future transport demand from upcoming projects such as the Water Transport Terminal and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing schemes.
CIDCO has awarded the construction contract to the J Kumar–J M Mhatre Joint Venture. Officials noted that the project will not only enhance airport connectivity but also strengthen Kharghar’s position as a major residential and commercial centre, linking it efficiently to Taloja and Navde.
A CIDCO official said, “Known for its planned infrastructure, greenery, and educational institutions, Kharghar is poised to enter a new phase of growth once the coastal road becomes operational. If work progresses as scheduled, the road is expected to be ready by 2029.”
Once completed, the Kharghar Coastal Road is projected to become a vital urban artery, supporting sustainable urban development and rapid economic expansion in Navi Mumbai, while improving access to key business, residential, and recreational hubs.
