State Grants Final Extensions To 3 Stalled Mumbai Redevelopment Projects

Three long-delayed Mumbai redevelopment projects, earlier cleared during the tenure of senior NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal, have received retrospective deadline extensions from the state government. The projects had remained stalled for years amid scrutiny linked to the Maharashtra Sadan case.

The extensions were approved at a cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure meeting on December 9, 2025. Bhujbal was acquitted in the Maharashtra Sadan case by a special court on January 23, 2026, and the government resolution formalising the extensions was issued on February 3.

All three projects were originally sanctioned between 2001 and 2008, when Bhujbal held senior roles in the state government. Delays were attributed to procedural hurdles and scrutiny arising from allegations related to the Maharashtra Sadan construction matter.

One project concerns redevelopment of government land in Ghatkopar East through a private developer. Approved in September 2001, with a work order issued in August 2004 for completion within four years, it received four earlier extensions, the last valid until December 2019. It has now been granted a fifth and final extension from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2027.

The second project involves government land in Chembur. Approved in August 2007 and issued a work order in June 2008 with a three-and-a-half-year timeline, it received three prior extensions ending in August 2021. A fourth and final extension now runs from August 27, 2021 to December 31, 2027.

The third project covers redevelopment at Mudran Kamgar Nagar in Andheri East and land parcel 627 at Chunabhatti. Approved in August 2008 and issued a work order on August 31, 2009, it had two extensions until January 2021. A third and final extension now extends the deadline to March 31, 2027.

A senior PWD official rejected any link between the extensions and Bhujbal’s acquittal, stating that approval had been granted in December and that the focus remained on completing the projects.
