MMRDA Initiates Intensive Safety Inspection Of Metro Line-4 Following Mulund Slab Collapse

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a high-level Special Intensive Safety Inspection of the under-construction Metro Line-4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali) after a slab collapse near Pier No. P196 in Mulund on Saturday.

In an official order, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal directed a mandatory corridor-wide safety review as a preventive and corrective measure. The inspection team is led by Shri Basavraj M. Bhadragond, with Deputy Team Leaders Abhijit Bhishikar overseeing the Wadala to Sonapur section and Madhukar Kharat managing the Sonapur to Gaimukh stretch.

Senior officials from Project, Safety, QA/QC, and Design departments, along with external Safety Heads from Metro Line-9 and Line-5, are participating. The inspection will examine parapets, edge beams, crash barriers, structural elements, precast segments, temporary works, safety nets, and overall workmanship across the corridor.

The operation, which began on Sunday, is expected to continue for three to four days. Key directives include the immediate rectification of unsafe or non-compliant structures, suspension or restriction of construction in high-risk areas, and full cooperation from all contractors, including access to records.

MMRDA officials emphasized that the special inspection is aimed at ensuring public safety and reinforcing quality standards across the Metro Line-4 project. The Mulund incident has highlighted the critical need for stringent safety checks, and the authority is taking proactive steps to prevent any recurrence.

The initiative reflects a commitment to rigorous oversight, to protect commuters, construction personnel, and surrounding communities while maintaining the project timeline. By addressing potential hazards and enforcing compliance, MMRDA seeks to strengthen safety protocols and quality assurance measures throughout the metro corridor.
