Mumbai Transport Stack Launched To Create Unified Digital Mobility Network Across MMR

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to launch the Mumbai Transport Stack (MTS). This open data exchange platform integrates the region’s diverse transport systems into a single digital framework.

“The Mumbai Transport Stack (MTS) is officially underway, an open data exchange platform that will unify Mumbai’s entire transport network and unlock affordable, next-generation mobility for Mumbaikars,” the MMRDA said in a statement on Friday (20 February).

The collaboration signals the start of the design and development phase of a technology-led mobility architecture for Mumbai and the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Support for the initiative is being provided by JICA Dx Lab, which has previously assisted global cities in building open, data-centric transport ecosystems.

Senior representatives from MMRDA and JICA recently met to formally initiate the project aimed at reshaping mobility across the region.

The Mumbai Transport Stack is envisioned as digital public infrastructure built on open Standard Data Exchange Protocols and aligned with the Mobility as a Service framework. It seeks to enable seamless interoperability between Metro, bus, suburban rail and other transport modes through secure data sharing.

The system is anchored in five guiding principles: open source architecture, interoperability, privacy by design, secure and trusted systems, and scalability.

According to MMRDA, the stack will serve as a secure digital backbone, facilitating coordination among operators, government agencies and private mobility providers. Once implemented, commuters can expect integrated ticketing, real-time service tracking, multimodal journey planning and live parking updates.

“This isn’t just a tech upgrade. This is Mumbai building a unified, intelligent transport network for the future,” the MMRDA said.
