The congested surroundings of Borivali railway station may soon undergo a significant transformation, inspired by the recent redesign of the Bandra West station precinct. BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay has proposed a comprehensive commuter-focused overhaul after reviewing the upgraded layout in Bandra.
Borivali, one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway stations, currently faces severe congestion at both its East and West exits. Unregulated rickshaw queues, encroached footpaths, and mixed vehicular traffic have created daily bottlenecks, leaving pedestrians with little safe space to move. Auto-rickshaws frequently block access lanes, hawkers occupy footpaths, and wrong-side driving further compounds the chaos.

Drawing parallels with Bandra’s redeveloped model, Upadhyay has suggested introducing structured auto and share-rickshaw stands, clearly marked BEST bus bays, and expanded pedestrian zones to streamline commuter movement. The proposal also calls for removing traffic bottlenecks near station entry and exit points to ensure smoother circulation.

“Borivali sees even higher footfall than Bandra. It needs proper auto stands, bus stops, and space for commuters to move comfortably,” Upadhyay said.
The redevelopment plan is expected to be financed through MLA development funds. The next step involves placing the proposal before the Railway Ministry and relevant state authorities for approval and coordination.
If implemented, the project aims to reduce daily congestion, improve pedestrian safety, and create a more organised transit hub—bringing Borivali’s station precinct in line with modern urban mobility standards seen elsewhere in Mumbai.
