A recently opened shortcut road near University of Mumbai Gate 1 in Kalina, intended to decongest Kapadia Nagar Junction, has instead created fresh challenges for commuters. The stretch connects the university gate to the UTI building in Bharat Nagar but was made accessible to the public before it was fully completed.
Motorists using the route have pointed out the absence of essential infrastructure, including lane dividers, streetlights and a clearly defined entry point on the university side. The lack of these basic features has raised safety concerns and added to confusion, especially during peak traffic hours.
A January 9 report by mid-day highlighted the condition of the road, following which residents say civic authorities resumed work. Subsequently, a concrete surface was laid and parts of the route were opened in a more usable condition.
Sharing his experience, AV Shenoy, Activist, Mumbai Vikas Samithi, said:

“Earlier, the road had been full of pebbles, and it was impossible to have a smooth entry, but now, since the civic body opened up the road completely, it has helped commuters a lot. It gives us a smooth entry onto the shortcut, providing an escape from the traffic on the WEH during peak traffic hours.”
While the improved surface has brought some relief, concerns remain about the prolonged delay and incomplete infrastructure. Jitendra Gupta, Citizens Transport Committee member, questioned the reasons behind the slow progress:
“Even though a part of the road has been opened, the question that persists is why there has been a delay. Is it because of encroachment or some other reason? The delay will only lead to public money going down the drain.”
Commuters continue to hope that the pending works will be completed soon to ensure safer, more efficient connectivity in the Kalina area.
