Mumbai’s iconic Kala Ghoda precinct is on the cusp of a dramatic transformation, with its redevelopment project nearly complete and an official inauguration scheduled later this month. Civil works, including cobbled pathways, have been finished, and vibrant murals and street art now bring new life to the area, reinforcing its status as a cultural and heritage hotspot.
Pedestrian-Friendly Lanes
The precinct’s internal lanes—V B Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Ropewalk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road—have been given a fresh facelift. Hydraulic bollards have been installed to allow these lanes to operate as pedestrian-only zones on weekends, ensuring controlled access while enhancing safety and accessibility.
BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar, who visited the site on Saturday, highlighted that the project draws inspiration from iconic streets like Buchanan Street in Glasgow and Carnaby Street in London. “Kala Ghoda will initially function as a pedestrian-only zone on weekends, with plans to extend it to all days, creating a safer and more vibrant cultural experience for residents and visitors alike,” he said.
Phase 2 Plans: Underground Parking
Narwekar also revealed that Phase 2 of the redevelopment will include underground parking to manage the precinct’s growing visitor numbers and reduce traffic congestion. “The goal of Phase 2 is to allow visitors to fully enjoy the precinct’s art and culture without the distraction of vehicles. The proposed facility will have a capacity for 150–200 cars,” he added.
Art and Heritage Highlights
A key feature of the project is four sculptures by Sir JJ School of Art artists, selected to reflect Kala Ghoda’s artistic identity while preserving its heritage charm. An al fresco dining facility is also planned to let visitors enjoy meals outdoors. Colaba resident Bella Shah said, “For example, the hen-on-a-basket sculpture was chosen because it’s unique to Mumbai. Going forward, we will encourage artists to use recycled materials in their work.”
With cobbled streets, murals, sculptures, and pedestrian plazas ready, Kala Ghoda is poised to become a safer, more vibrant hub for art, culture, and community interaction in the heart of Mumbai.
