BMC Acts After ‘Musical Road’ On Coastal Road Disturbs Residents; Experiment Faces Hurdles

Mumbai’s ambitious projects to enhance the city’s infrastructure and public spaces have seen a mix of admiration and criticism, and the recently launched ‘Musical Road’ is now in the spotlight. Launched on February 11 along the iconic Coastal Road, the project was designed to play the Oscar-winning tune Jai Ho when vehicles pass certain stretches at speeds between 60 and 70 km/h.

However, the initiative quickly turned into a source of discomfort for residents living near the road. Within days of its inauguration, complaints poured in, prompting a petition signed by nearly 650 families requesting the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner to halt the music.

“The music was playing from 6 am to midnight, disturbing the peace in the area. Residents could not even keep their windows open. It was affecting the sleep of senior citizens, patients, and school children,” said a concerned local.

Responding to the growing complaints, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took immediate action. The civic body directed the project’s contractor and technical consultants to conduct a detailed assessment of the sound levels along the affected stretches. Decibel readings are being measured to evaluate the extent of noise disturbance.

Additionally, the BMC is reviewing the project to identify potential modifications that could allow the Musical Road to continue without inconveniencing local residents. Officials stated that the study will focus on alternative approaches, including adjusting the timing, volume, or even the tune itself to balance the novelty of the initiative with the residents’ right to peace and quiet.

While the Musical Road was intended as a unique and innovative addition to Mumbai’s public infrastructure, the immediate backlash highlights the challenges of implementing experimental projects in densely populated urban areas. Civic authorities are now tasked with finding a solution that retains the creative aspect of the project while minimizing disruption for nearby communities.

As of now, the BMC has not announced a timeline for resuming the musical effects, emphasizing that resident welfare and safety remain the top priority in all municipal planning and public projects.
