Next Big Connectivity Push: How New Highways Will Link NCR & Ujjain To Delhi–Mumbai Expressway

The Union government has approved two highway projects worth around Rs 7,500 crore to strengthen connectivity with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, even as the major corridor is yet to become fully operational. The newly approved projects aim to improve access from parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh to the expressway through a network of feeder routes.

One of the key projects focuses on improving connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. The Cabinet has approved a revised cost estimate for the project after incorporating an 11-kilometre elevated section into the road alignment. The 31.42-km greenfield corridor, costing Rs 3,630.77 crore, will connect the DND–Ballabhgarh Bypass—part of the Delhi–Faridabad–Sohna spur of the expressway—to the airport.

“This 31.42 km long project corridor will provide direct and high-speed connectivity from South Delhi, Faridabad and Gurugram to Jewar International Airport, thereby promoting economic growth and logistics efficiency across the National Capital Region (NCR),” an official statement said.

The corridor will intersect several major transport routes, including the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway, and will also link with the Dedicated Freight Corridor.

“The alignment will have airport (Jewar), rail network (DFC) and several expressways – offering a seamless multimodal transport convergence,” an official from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway explained.

In another decision, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a Rs 3,839.42 crore project to develop an 80-km four-lane corridor along the Badnawar–Petlawad–Thandla–Timarwani section of NH-752D. The project will provide direct connectivity between Ujjain and the Timarwani interchange on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway.

“The instant Badnawar–Timrawani stretch is an existing intermediate lane (5.5m) with poor geometry (speed 20-50 kmph). Upgrading this section will complete the direct four-lane connectivity from Ujjain to Timrawani interchange at Delhi–Mumbai Expressway with speed 80-100 kmph,” the government had said.

“Upgradation of the Timarwani–Badnawar section will strengthen inter-state connectivity and enable efficient movement of traffic and would also take care of surge in traffic during Simhastha Kumbh Mela in April-2028,” the government had added.

These highway projects are part of a broader strategy to expand feeder routes connecting key economic hubs, airports and pilgrimage centres to the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, the country’s longest under-construction expressway. The 1,386-km corridor links major cities including Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Mumbai.
