To ease overcrowding and enhance commuting comfort on Mumbai’s busy suburban network, Western Railway (WR) will increase the length of 16 existing 12-car local trains to 15-car services, effective Thursday, March 19.
According to a press release from Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, this upgrade will raise the total number of 15-car services on WR from 211 to 227, while the overall number of suburban trains will remain at 1,414. Of the 16 augmented services, eight will run during peak hours—four each in the morning and evening—to better accommodate the city’s rush-hour passenger flow.
“This initiative reflects Western Railway’s continued commitment towards providing efficient, safe and passenger-friendly services,” the release stated.
The detailed schedule of the 16 trains being extended covers several major routes, including Churchgate (CCG) to Virar (VR), Nallasopara (NSP) to Churchgate, and Borivali (BVI) to Churchgate, among others. Commuters are advised to consult Annexure-I or check official platforms for precise timings and stoppages.

This move aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise Mumbai’s suburban rail infrastructure. WR has been introducing new rakes and extending platforms at select stations to accommodate longer trains, ensuring smoother boarding and safer journeys.
Passengers are encouraged to verify the updated timetable through Western Railway’s website or official mobile apps, as minor changes in train timings or halts may occur.
With this augmentation, WR aims to provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for thousands of daily commuters who rely on the suburban network, widely regarded as Mumbai’s lifeline.
