City’s Green Belt Gets Protection Boost As SGNP Eco-Sensitive Plan Approved

The Maharashtra government has cleared the draft Zonal Master Plan for the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) surrounding Sanjay Gandhi National Park, marking a key step towards regulated development and a balanced push for eco-tourism in one of Mumbai’s most environmentally sensitive regions.

Issued on March 20 by the state’s revenue and forest department, the government resolution formalises the plan under the Environment Protection Act, making compliance with its provisions mandatory. Any future modifications to the plan will require prior approval from the state government.

The blueprint introduces strict safeguards aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of the area. These include a ban on ‘red category’ industries—classified as highly polluting—along with measures to protect water bodies and improve the management of encroachments and informal settlements within the zone.

The eco-sensitive zone around Sanjay Gandhi National Park was first notified in December 2016, with the state mandated to prepare a comprehensive zonal plan in consultation with local stakeholders. The draft plan was developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in coordination with other agencies.

To ensure public participation, the proposal was opened for feedback in August 2025 before being finalised and submitted for approval earlier this year.

The approved plan is expected to guide future development in the ESZ by balancing conservation priorities with sustainable tourism initiatives. Authorities aim to promote eco-friendly activities while ensuring that the fragile ecosystem surrounding the national park remains protected from unchecked urban expansion.

With this move, the state seeks to create a framework that supports environmental preservation while enabling responsible tourism, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding Mumbai’s green lungs amid rapid urbanisation.
