‘Nayak’ TBM To Lead India’s Largest Hard Rock Tunnelling For Thane-Borivali Project

Work on the ambitious Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel project is set to begin, with the deployment of ‘Nayak’, India’s largest single-shield hard rock Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project, being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Thane and Borivali, cutting travel time from around 1.5 hours to just 15 minutes.

Spanning 11.84 km, the project involves the construction of twin tunnels beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, along with connecting roads linking the Western Express Highway in Borivali to Ghodbunder Road in Thane. The tunnels will be developed using advanced TBM technology to ensure efficient execution while minimising environmental impact and ground disturbance.

The TBM ‘Nayak’ stands out as the largest of its kind in India, designed specifically for hard rock conditions. Another machine, named ‘Arjuna’, is also expected to be deployed soon. In total, four TBMs will be used for the project—two launched from the Thane end and two from Borivali.

Each machine measures approximately 86 metres in length and features a cutter head with a diameter of 13.34 metres. Operating at a speed of 4.5 rotations per minute, these TBMs are engineered for precision and efficiency in challenging geological conditions.

According to MMRDA, the name ‘Nayak’ is inspired by a butterfly species (Moduza Procris) found in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. “The species is known for its strength, agility and precision. A reflection of the TBM’s power, control and leadership underground,” it said.

Each tunnel will have three lanes, including an emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The design also incorporates modern safety features such as advanced ventilation systems, firefighting equipment, smoke detectors, and LED signage, ensuring a secure and efficient travel experience.
