The long-pending redevelopment of housing societies occupied by Mathadi workers in Ghansoli has moved forward, with a key decision taken during a general body meeting held recently. The development has brought relief to residents living in ageing and deteriorating buildings in the area.
The housing complexes, originally constructed by CIDCO, have been in need of redevelopment for several years due to structural concerns and outdated infrastructure. The issue had remained unresolved for an extended period, affecting thousands of residents dependent on these homes.
At the meeting, conducted in the presence of CIDCO officials, a majority of members voted in favour of appointing Bhagwati, a construction firm, as the developer for the project. The decision marks a significant step towards initiating the redevelopment process and addressing long-standing housing challenges faced by Mathadi workers.
Residents have welcomed the move, expressing relief that the process has finally gained clarity after prolonged delays. The redevelopment is expected to replace existing structures with modern residential units, offering improved living conditions and updated amenities.
The societies in question form an important housing cluster for Mathadi workers, a workforce segment engaged in loading and unloading activities across the region. Over time, the condition of these buildings had deteriorated, making redevelopment essential from both safety and quality-of-life perspectives.
With the developer now finalised, the project is expected to progress towards further stages, including planning approvals and execution timelines. Officials indicated that the redevelopment process will be carried out in accordance with applicable norms, ensuring that eligible residents are accommodated within the new development.
The decision is being seen as a crucial milestone in improving housing conditions in Navi Mumbai, particularly for worker communities residing in older CIDCO-built societies.
