Bandra’s Key Junction Repaired After Water Leak Triggers Collapse

Traffic movement at Bandra’s busy Lucky Junction has returned to normal after civic authorities completed repair work following a sudden road cave-in last week. The incident, triggered by a pipeline leak, had caused waterlogging and major disruption in the area.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the problem occurred due to excessive water pressure in an underground pipe, which led to the road surface collapsing. Within minutes, the stretch was flooded with ankle-deep water, affecting vehicular movement and causing congestion at the junction.

Civic teams responded promptly, clearing debris and initiating repair work soon after the incident. Over the weekend, the damaged portion was restored and resurfaced to ensure smooth traffic flow. Sayyed Rafiq, a resident living near SV Road, acknowledged the swift action taken by authorities. “The BMC on Friday worked immediately to clean the road and the hole of all its debris. Civic staff then laid a new tar road over it for easy flow of traffic. They handled it well and acted promptly. This has spared us a lot of inconvenience. We just hope that no such thing happens again.”

The cave-in had initially forced traffic police to divert vehicles, leading to long delays and congestion on Friday. However, the situation improved significantly after repairs were completed. “The flow of traffic is back to normal, without much delay. On Friday, we saw traffic crawling. We had to carefully manage and divert every vehicle, which caused a lot of ruckus at the junction. But BMC has repaired the road already… it is now back to normal.”

Earlier, the BMC’s H West ward had stated that such incidents are uncommon and attributed the damage to pressure-related pipeline failure.
