Mumbai is gearing up for a significant infrastructure boost, with the BMC proposing two new bridges between Byculla and Mazgaon to tackle long-standing traffic congestion. The project is expected to reduce travel time on the CSMT (Fort)–Byculla route from as much as 45 minutes to under 10 minutes, offering major relief to daily commuters.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has outlined an extensive plan to ease pressure on some of South Mumbai’s busiest corridors. According to Indian Express, the initiative focuses on improving connectivity between Byculla and Mazgaon—areas that frequently experience heavy bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. The proposed development aims to create a smoother, uninterrupted route while reducing reliance on overcrowded intersections.
Twin bridges to enhance connectivity
A key component of the project is a 916-metre cable-stayed bridge in Byculla, which will replace the more than 100-year-old Y bridge that has been deemed structurally unsafe. The upcoming bridge is designed to accommodate increased traffic, featuring six lanes for vehicles along with modern design elements such as lighting enhancements and a dedicated selfie point.
Complementing this is a second flyover, approximately 848 metres long, which will branch out from the existing JJ Flyover and connect directly to the new structure. Together, these will form a continuous, high-speed corridor linking Byculla and Mazgaon, effectively bypassing congestion-prone junctions like Richardson and Crudas junction and Saboo Siddik junction.
Travel time to drop significantly
Once completed, the new corridor is expected to dramatically shorten commute times between CSMT (Fort) and Byculla to under 10 minutes, compared to the current 30–45 minutes during rush hour. The total project cost stands at ₹1,841 crore, with ₹280 crore allocated for the cable-stayed bridge and ₹1,561 crore for the connecting flyover. Officials attribute the lower cost of the main bridge to its suspended design over railway tracks.
Construction is already well underway, with the Byculla bridge reported to be 78 per cent complete and slated for opening by November 2026. Work on the second flyover has also begun, with completion expected by early 2028.
“The idea is to provide a seamless connectivity network in South Mumbai through these two bridges. Going forward, this lane serves as a continuous high-speed north-south stretch within the city. This is a future-ready project, and the decision to link these two bridges has been taken so that traffic congestion in the island city comes down drastically in the future,” Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), told The Indian Express.
