Mumbai’s civic body has introduced a smart and sustainable upgrade to public spaces, installing solar-powered benches equipped with mobile charging points and Wi-Fi at Fort Garden and Joggers Park in Bandra. The initiative, rolled out on a pilot basis, is aimed at enhancing visitor convenience while reducing dependence on conventional electricity.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the project is part of its broader push toward eco-friendly infrastructure. These benches operate entirely on solar energy, offering users a practical solution to the growing need for accessible charging facilities in public areas.
Addressing everyday connectivity needs
With mobile phones now integral to daily life, access to charging points has become increasingly important. However, such facilities are often limited in public places, and in some cases, users are required to pay for short durations of charging. To bridge this gap and manage rising electricity demand, the BMC has introduced these solar-powered installations in select gardens.
“The standout feature of these benches is their ability to harness solar energy throughout the day, enabling visitors to conveniently charge their mobile phones within garden premises,” said an official from the BMC’s garden department. He further noted that the benches are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, addressing the growing demand for seamless internet access in public spaces.
Built for durability and long-term savings
In addition to improving convenience, the benches are expected to significantly cut down electricity usage and maintenance costs. They are made from corrosion-resistant stainless steel, allowing them to endure varied weather conditions while maintaining performance over time.
According to officials, the benches are designed to last up to 30 years, making them a durable and cost-efficient addition to Mumbai’s public infrastructure. The pilot project will likely guide future expansion across more gardens and open spaces in the city.
