Virar–Alibaug Corridor Gains Momentum; Rs 765–Rs 1,000 Toll Proposal in Focus

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has stepped up work on the proposed Virar–Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, a 126-km mega infrastructure project aimed at decongesting Mumbai and boosting regional connectivity.

The access-controlled corridor will link Virar to Alibaug via Thane and Navi Mumbai. Planned with 8 to 14 lanes, the project is expected to divert heavy traffic away from Mumbai’s core, easing pressure on existing road networks.

A Loksatta report has brought proposed toll rates into focus, with commuters likely to pay between Rs 765 and Rs 1,000 for the full stretch, depending on vehicle type. The proposed pricing has sparked attention as the project advances.

With an estimated cost exceeding Rs 55,000 crore, land acquisition will account for a significant portion of the expenditure. The corridor will also enhance connectivity to key infrastructure, including Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu).

Envisioned as a multimodal route integrating metro and bus systems, the project will be implemented in phases, with completion targeted around 2030, subject to land acquisition and rehabilitation challenges.
