Operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be temporarily halted for six hours on May 7 as part of its routine pre-monsoon maintenance programme. Both runways will remain non-operational between 11 am and 5 pm, allowing authorities to carry out essential inspections and repair work ahead of the rainy season.
The airport’s operator, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), has scheduled this annual exercise to ensure the continued safety and durability of its airside infrastructure. During this period, the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 will be closed, giving maintenance teams a dedicated window to complete critical checks and necessary upkeep.
This pre-monsoon activity is considered vital for maintaining operational readiness, particularly as heavy rains can impact runway conditions. Experts will assess the surface for any signs of wear and tear and implement preventive measures to ensure smooth aircraft movement during adverse weather. The airport, which spans more than 1,033 acres, will deploy advanced equipment and carefully planned processes to ensure all work is completed efficiently within the stipulated time frame.
To minimise inconvenience, the airport authorities coordinated extensively with airlines and aviation stakeholders well in advance. Notifications were issued months earlier, allowing carriers to revise their schedules and avoid last-minute disruptions or cancellations.
“CSMIA has meticulously coordinated this maintenance with multiple stakeholders, including airlines and aviation authorities, to enable a seamless experience for passengers. This proactive approach reflects CSMIA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and reliability in its operations. By prioritising infrastructure upkeep, CSMIA aims to ensure a smooth experience for both airlines and passengers, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and service excellence,” said a spokesperson of the airport.
The planned shutdown highlights the airport’s focus on safety preparedness and operational efficiency ahead of the monsoon season.
