BMC Slashes Pothole Repair Budget Ahead Of Monsoon As Road Upgrades Reduce Damage

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reduced its allocation for pothole repairs to Rs 1,050 million ahead of the monsoon, down from Rs 2,000 million last year. The civic body attributed the cut to declining demand for emergency repairs, driven by recent improvements in road infrastructure. The provision has been included as part of its standard monsoon preparedness measures.

The lower spending comes in the wake of significant progress in the ongoing road concreting programme, a Rs 170 billion initiative that is now close to 75% complete, compared to around 45% at the same point last year. The project has strengthened road surfaces across key arterial and internal roads, leading to better resilience during heavy rainfall and reducing visible wear and tear.

As a result, the need for frequent patchwork has declined across various municipal wards. The use of mastic asphalt for temporary repairs has dropped by nearly 50% over the past year, signalling a shift towards more durable, long-term surfacing solutions. Officials said this transition has allowed the corporation to reallocate funds toward focused maintenance instead of recurring emergency fixes.

The current budget will primarily support road inspections, essential patchwork, and pre-monsoon maintenance on busy corridors and residential streets. Civic teams will continue to track road conditions closely and intervene where structural issues emerge. With many stretches already upgraded, residents are likely to see fewer short-term repair works this season.

According to allocation details, funds will also be used for clearing drainage systems around repaired areas and addressing foundational issues identified during inspections. Priority will be given to high-traffic routes and congestion-prone zones, while standby teams will remain available to tackle sudden road failures. The strategy is aimed at preserving long-term gains from the concreting drive and minimising disruptions during the rainy season.
