MHADA Service Charge Dues, Redevelopment Plans To Be Finalised After Govt Review

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is set to take key decisions on pending service charge payments and redevelopment proposals across Mumbai, with the matter now moving to the state’s top leadership for final approval.

Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai stated that a consensus has been reached on resolving outstanding service charges linked to 56 MHADA buildings located in Mumbai and its suburban areas. The issue was deliberated during a meeting held under Rule 101 of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, in connection with Notice No. 569.

According to Desai, the proposal recommends clearing dues for the period between 2021 and 2026 at previously applicable rates. The plan will be forwarded by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, following which a coordinated decision will be taken. “A unanimous decision will be taken regarding the payment of pending service charges,” Desai said.

Alongside the dues issue, redevelopment of ageing housing clusters has also gained momentum. A separate discussion under Notice No. 82 focused on cluster redevelopment proposals covering fishermen colonies, police housing, other local settlements, and MHADA colonies in Mahim. Officials indicated that initial discussions have been encouraging, signalling progress on long-pending redevelopment initiatives.

In another development, attention has turned to MHADA housing societies in Samata Nagar, Kandivali (East). The matter, raised under Urgent Question No. 6831, centred on redevelopment concerns and tenant relief. The meeting concluded with a broad agreement on taking measures that prioritise residents’ interests.

Desai has instructed MHADA’s Mumbai board to prepare a structured, time-bound roadmap for redevelopment in these areas. The directive aims to accelerate decision-making and ensure that stalled projects move forward efficiently.

With multiple proposals now awaiting final clearance, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining both financial settlements and the future of several MHADA housing clusters across the city.
