Mumbai’s efforts to diversify its water supply have taken a significant step forward after authorities granted coastal regulatory approval for a proposed large-scale desalination plant at Manori. The Manori desalination facility is being seen as a strategic response to Mumbai’s dependence on distant reservoirs and its vulnerability to erratic monsoon patterns. However, the approval comes with strict environmental conditions, particularly concerning the impact of brine discharge on marine ecosystems. Academic institutions will be involved in assessing impacts on marine flora and fauna, as well as exploring improved brine management and reuse technologies. Dedicated funding for such studies highlights a cautious approach by regulators.
Experts warn that poorly managed desalination processes could alter coastal water chemistry, especially in ecologically sensitive zones such as mangroves and fishing areas. Restrictions on activities in nearby creeks have also been introduced to safeguard marine habitats and local livelihoods.
From a technical standpoint, the project includes plans to use tunnelling for intake and discharge pipelines to minimise disturbance to the seabed. There is also an emphasis on integrating energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources to reduce the plant’s environmental footprint.
The project will be implemented in phases, starting with an initial capacity before expanding further. This approach is expected to help assess operational performance and environmental compliance.
