Two Dead At Dahisar–Bhayandar Link Road Site: BMC Orders Probe, VJTI Team To Lead Technical Audit

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a formal investigation after a fatal accident at the Dahisar–Bhayandar Link Road (DBLR) construction site claimed two lives on Saturday. The incident occurred in Bhayandar (West), where a platform reportedly gave way and collapsed on workers at a casting yard, triggering renewed scrutiny over safety practices at large infrastructure projects across Mumbai.

An official statement confirmed that a “detailed and immediate inquiry” has been launched into the mishap. Authorities have assured that the probe will remain impartial, and any lapses in safety compliance will attract strict action against those responsible, including contractors and site supervisors.

To ensure a technically sound evaluation, the BMC has appointed a panel of experts from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). The team has been tasked with conducting a swift, evidence-based assessment and submitting its findings to the civic body. Based on the report, further disciplinary and legal action will be taken if violations are confirmed.

The civic body noted that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for worker safety already exist at construction sites. The current investigation will specifically verify whether these protocols were followed at the accident site and whether negligence contributed to the collapse.

Reaffirming its stance, the BMC stated that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward safety violations. Officials emphasised that with multiple mega infrastructure projects underway across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, worker protection remains non-negotiable.

Following the incident, the civic body has also ordered fresh third-party inspections of critical machinery, including cranes, gantries, and heavy lifting equipment used across major projects. In addition, stricter and more frequent safety audits will now be enforced.

The BMC further announced that a comprehensive, site-level safety framework will be made mandatory across all packages of the Versova–Bhayandar coastal road corridor. An independent agency will also be engaged to reassess safety systems and recommend corrective measures wherever gaps are identified.
