Dharavi Redevelopment Push Gains Momentum With Focus On Eligibility Resolution

Amid escalating concerns surrounding the Dharavi redevelopment project, recent discussions between officials and community representatives have signalled a constructive shift. Following a protest led by the Dharavi Bachao Andolan (DBA), authorities have decided to organise sector-wise camps aimed at addressing the long-pending issue of “unresolved eligibility.” The move is seen as a step toward rebuilding trust among residents and accelerating progress on the project.

The march began near the Bismillah Hotel area and proceeded via Dharavi Police Station to 90 Feet Road, drawing participation from local residents and members of multiple political parties. After the demonstration, a delegation comprising Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad, MLA Jyoti Gaikwad, MP Anil Desai, Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, and MLA Mahesh Sawant met DRP/SRA Authority CEO Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar to present a memorandum outlining key concerns.

A central focus of the meeting was the ambiguity around eligibility status for many residents. With numerous cases still pending, uncertainty has been widespread. To address this, officials will conduct dedicated camps across sectors to guide residents on documentation and streamline the verification process. Clarifying concerns, Dr. Kalyankar stated, “Undecided does not mean ineligible. Every Dharavi resident who fulfills the necessary documents will be included in the redevelopment project.” He also assured that each application is being carefully reviewed to prevent any injustice.

Sensitive matters, including the handling of religious structures, will be addressed by an independent committee led by a former judge. Authorities emphasised that all such decisions will involve consultations with local representatives.

Efforts are also underway to compile and publish sector-wise data of eligible residents, which is expected to improve transparency and strengthen public confidence. While the protest briefly disrupted traffic, police acted promptly to restore order. Officials remain optimistic that greater community participation will be key to advancing the redevelopment initiative.
