The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a large-scale plantation initiative across nearly 65 acres in Aarey as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Mumbai’s green cover and support ecological conservation within the city.
The proposal follows a joint site inspection conducted last week by civic officials and representatives of the state forest department. The survey was carried out under instructions from the municipal administration to identify suitable land parcels for afforestation activities. Officials assessed the terrain, vegetation, soil quality, and overall site conditions to determine the feasibility of large-scale plantation work.
According to civic authorities, the plantation exercise is likely to begin after the monsoon season, when weather conditions are considered more favourable for the survival and healthy growth of saplings.
The initiative forms part of the BMC’s broader environmental strategy aimed at increasing urban tree cover, improving air quality, and addressing ecological concerns arising from rapid urbanisation and infrastructure expansion. Officials said the plantation drive would primarily focus on native and indigenous tree species to ensure ecological compatibility and long-term sustainability.
The proposed drive is also linked to compensatory afforestation requirements associated with development and infrastructure projects across Mumbai. In recent years, the civic body has undertaken similar plantation activities in different parts of the city to balance tree loss and preserve environmental stability.
Authorities said preparatory measures such as soil treatment, fencing, and irrigation systems are expected to be included in the project to improve implementation and enhance sapling survival rates.
Aarey, regarded as one of Mumbai’s key green zones, has remained central to environmental and conservation debates in recent years. Officials emphasised that preserving ecological balance in the area remains important due to its role as a natural green buffer for the city.
Beyond improving greenery, the plantation initiative is also expected to support biodiversity conservation by creating habitats for local flora and fauna. Municipal officials are likely to finalise timelines and execution plans after receiving internal approvals and coordinating with the forest department for regulatory compliance.
