Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set for a major relief upgrade, with a new station planned between Thane and Mulund aimed at reducing overcrowding on one of the city’s busiest commuter stretches. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has granted in-principle approval for the project, marking an important step towards improving passenger convenience on the Central Railway corridor.
Daily travel between Thane and Mulund is widely regarded as one of the most congested and stressful segments of Mumbai’s local train system. During peak hours, trains often operate beyond capacity, making boarding and deboarding extremely difficult for thousands of commuters who rely on the service for work and daily travel.
The proposed suburban station is expected to act as a crucial pressure-release point by distributing passenger load more evenly across the network. It will offer an additional stop between existing stations, reducing dependence on already overcrowded boarding points and improving overall accessibility for nearby residential zones.
In an official communication addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the decision has been taken to strengthen suburban rail connectivity and ease operational stress on existing infrastructure. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance commuter experience and improve efficiency across Mumbai’s railway system.
The new station will not only benefit passengers travelling between Thane and Mulund but will also improve connectivity for surrounding areas, providing more flexible travel options and better access to the main rail line. It is expected to integrate local neighbourhoods more effectively with the wider Mumbai suburban network.
