Mumbai’s city-wide surveillance system is set to enter a new phase of expansion with the deployment of nearly 15,000 cameras across five zones as part of one of India’s largest urban surveillance upgrades. The initiative aims to enhance real-time monitoring, improve coordination between civic agencies, and strengthen public safety infrastructure across the city.
The project is being implemented by a consortium comprising GVPR Engineers Limited, Secutech Automation, and CMS Computers. The collaboration combines expertise in civil infrastructure, integrated technology systems, and operational deployment for large-scale urban monitoring projects.
Building upon earlier stages of the Mumbai City Surveillance Project, the latest phase focuses not only on expanding camera coverage but also on integrating advanced intelligent systems. The upgraded network is expected to feature AI-based video analytics, including facial recognition, traffic monitoring, speed-violation detection, and behavioural analysis tools.
Authorities stated that the new infrastructure will integrate surveillance feeds from multiple zones into a unified operational framework, enabling better coordination between law enforcement agencies and city administration departments. The system is expected to support daily urban management functions such as traffic regulation, incident response, public monitoring, and emergency coordination.
Unlike earlier surveillance systems that primarily functioned as post-incident monitoring tools, the upgraded network is designed to support proactive surveillance and faster decision-making through real-time analytics. Officials believe this shift towards AI-driven systems will improve preventive monitoring capabilities and enable quicker response during emergencies or law enforcement situations.
The expanded surveillance infrastructure is also expected to support disaster response management, civic monitoring, and traffic control in Mumbai’s densely populated urban environment, where integrated digital systems are increasingly becoming a key component of city administration.
According to project details, implementation work is scheduled to begin in May 2026. The deployment, operations, and maintenance phases of the project are planned over six years as Mumbai continues to strengthen its smart city and urban security infrastructure.
