BMC Plans Rs 155-Crore Parallel Flyover At Sion To Improve Thane-CSMT Connectivity

Mumbai commuters travelling between Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) could soon benefit from faster and smoother journeys, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposing a new two-lane flyover alongside the existing Sion flyover.

The proposed structure, estimated to cost around Rs 155 crore, will run parallel to the flyover currently undergoing reconstruction on Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road. Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) has been tasked with examining the project’s technical feasibility and assessing its potential impact on traffic management.

The Sion flyover serves as a critical transport link connecting Mumbai’s eastern and western corridors. At present, the bridge accommodates two lanes for traffic heading towards Thane and the eastern suburbs, while only one lane is available for vehicles travelling towards South Mumbai and CSMT. With traffic volumes increasing steadily over the years, the stretch frequently experiences severe congestion, particularly during peak hours.

To address this long-standing bottleneck, civic authorities have proposed constructing a separate flyover dedicated to southbound traffic. Once operational, vehicles heading towards CSMT and South Mumbai will have an independent route, easing pressure on the existing bridge and improving overall traffic flow. Officials believe the project will help reduce travel time, enhance commuting convenience and lower fuel consumption. The Mumbai Traffic Police have also reportedly expressed support for the proposal.

The municipal corporation is considering awarding the work to the same contractor handling the current Sion flyover reconstruction to avoid potential legal and contractual complications that have affected similar infrastructure projects in the past.

Meanwhile, reconstruction of the existing Sion Flyover, which connects Sion East and Sion West, is progressing rapidly. The century-old bridge was demolished after being deemed structurally unsafe and incapable of handling present-day traffic demands.

The ongoing project includes construction of a wider and stronger bridge, new approach roads, underpasses and a dedicated pedestrian foot overbridge near Sion railway station. Work involving girder installation, railway-related infrastructure and approach roads is currently underway, with completion targeted around May 2026.
