Mumbai’s ongoing infrastructure expansion continues to reshape the city’s landscape, but questions remain over whether these projects are effectively addressing long-standing urban challenges or creating new concerns. While authorities maintain that large-scale developments will improve mobility and connectivity, several urban experts and residents argue that maintenance gaps, planning shortcomings and environmental costs continue to overshadow the benefits.
Urban designer Oormi Kapadia acknowledged that projects such as the Coastal Road have reduced travel times for private vehicle users. However, she noted that the infrastructure has yet to significantly benefit public transport users, particularly bus commuters.
According to Kapadia, Mumbai’s key challenge lies in the absence of comprehensive planning and sustained maintenance. She argued that infrastructure projects are often implemented in isolation, without adequate assessment of their long-term effectiveness. She further suggested that greater emphasis should be placed on maintaining existing roads, footpaths and civic infrastructure rather than continuously launching new projects.
Kapadia also raised concerns about recurring road excavations, potholes and congestion, stating that these issues continue to affect daily mobility despite major investments in transport infrastructure. She questioned whether expensive projects such as the Coastal Road adequately serve the broader population and highlighted concerns regarding their environmental impact.
Communication and holistic wellness coach Sandhya Lal echoed similar concerns, pointing out that traffic congestion remains a persistent problem despite the construction of multiple flyovers and road upgrades. She argued that infrastructure planning should focus not only on building new projects but also on improving connectivity between transport systems and employment hubs.
Lal also questioned whether some large-scale transportation initiatives align with the city’s practical requirements, particularly when environmental considerations are taken into account. Referring to coastal infrastructure projects, she expressed concerns about their impact on marine ecosystems and local fishing communities.
While both speakers acknowledged that Mumbai is witnessing significant development, they stressed that the city’s future growth should be guided by stronger planning, better maintenance practices and greater consideration of environmental sustainability. As infrastructure investments continue, the debate over whether development is delivering meaningful long-term benefits remains ongoing.
