After years of delays and escalating costs, Mumbai’s much-awaited Mrinaltai Gore flyover extension has finally been opened to traffic, marking a significant boost for east-west connectivity in the city. The infrastructure project, which commenced in 2018, was originally slated for completion within two years but ultimately took nearly six years to become operational.
The newly inaugurated extension connects the Western Express Highway in Goregaon East with Ram Mandir Road and Relief Road in Oshiwara, creating a direct link between key transport corridors. The route is expected to improve traffic flow across one of Mumbai’s busiest stretches and reduce travel time for thousands of commuters who navigate the corridor daily.
What began as a ₹209-crore project eventually saw its cost rise to approximately ₹248 crore. The increase came amid prolonged construction timelines and additional engineering requirements that emerged during execution.
According to officials, multiple factors contributed to the delay. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted construction activities, while modifications to the ramp design, ongoing work on the Oshiwara and Walbhat bridges, and the need to integrate the extension with an existing railway overbridge added to the project’s complexity. Together, these challenges pushed the completion timeline back by more than 40 months.
Beyond its immediate traffic benefits, the flyover extension forms part of a larger transportation strategy for Mumbai. It has been planned to integrate with the proposed Lokhandwala interchange under the Coastal Road North project, helping create stronger links between existing and upcoming road infrastructure.
The opening of the extension is expected to ease congestion on surrounding routes by providing motorists with an alternative east-west connection. By linking major roads and transport networks, the project aims to make daily travel more efficient and improve overall urban mobility.
With traffic now rolling on the new stretch, the completion of the Mrinaltai Gore flyover extension adds another important link to Mumbai’s expanding road network and addresses a long-pending demand of commuters in the western suburbs.
