The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Patil of the K-North ward following allegations that he was involved in an investment fraud case in which actor Jaaved Jaaferi’s wife, Habiba Jaaferi, was allegedly cheated of Rs 16.24 crore.
The suspension order was issued by the civic body on Friday and formally served to Patil on June 7. The action comes after a criminal case was registered against him and several others in connection with an alleged real estate investment scheme.
According to the complaint filed with police, Patil and his associates allegedly persuaded Habiba Jaaferi to invest in a redevelopment project located in Mumbai’s Bandra area. The accused reportedly promised substantial financial returns and profits from the project. Investigators allege that forged documents were used to support the investment proposal and convince the complainant of its legitimacy.
Following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at Khar Police Station, Patil is reported to have gone missing. Law enforcement agencies have so far been unable to locate him.
Police have registered a cheating case against Patil and five other individuals in connection with the alleged fraud. Given the scale of the alleged financial loss and the seriousness of the accusations, the investigation has been transferred from local police to the Mumbai Crime Branch for further inquiry.
Crime Branch officials have launched a search operation to trace the accused persons. Multiple teams are conducting raids at various locations in and around Mumbai as part of efforts to locate Patil and others named in the case.
The investigation is currently focused on examining the alleged investment proposal, verifying the authenticity of the documents involved, and determining the roles played by each accused. Authorities are expected to record statements and scrutinise financial transactions linked to the redevelopment project as the probe progresses.
