Mumbai’s public transport network is set for a major connectivity upgrade after the Chembur station on Metro Line 2B received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), paving the way for its opening later this month.
The station is expected to become part of the operational Phase I section of Metro Line 2B and will play a significant role in linking multiple transit systems across the city. Transport planners view the development as a major step towards strengthening integration between the metro network, suburban railway services and the Mumbai Monorail.
The approval comes at a time when the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is preparing to restart monorail operations after an extended suspension and a series of technical upgrades. Officials believe the combined impact of the new metro station and the revival of monorail services could substantially improve passenger movement and increase ridership across both systems.
A key feature of the Chembur station is its strategic location. The upcoming metro station will provide direct connectivity with the suburban railway network while also serving as an interchange point for the monorail. Commuters will benefit from the close proximity between the Chembur Metro station and the VN Purav Monorail station, which are located approximately 50 metres apart, enabling convenient transfers between the two modes of transport.
Authorities expect this seamless integration to improve accessibility and encourage greater use of the monorail corridor, which has traditionally faced challenges in attracting high passenger volumes due to limited connections with other mass transit systems.
The 19.54-kilometre monorail corridor connecting Sant Ghadge Maharaj (SGM) Chowk and Chembur has also recently secured the final statutory safety certification required for operations under a modern Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. The upgraded technology is expected to enhance service reliability, operational efficiency and train frequency management.
As part of the modernisation programme, MMRDA has introduced 10 new domestically manufactured monorail trainsets and refurbished the existing fleet. With safety approvals in place, authorities are now awaiting final clearance from the state government before resuming passenger services on the corridor.
The combined upgrades are expected to further strengthen Mumbai’s multimodal transport ecosystem and improve last-mile connectivity for commuters across the eastern suburbs.
