Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora has requested Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to facilitate the transfer of an 11-acre government-owned land parcel currently occupied by Richardson & Cruddas to the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, a move aimed at significantly strengthening Mumbai’s public healthcare infrastructure.
Deora recently met Shinde and subsequently shared details of the proposal, highlighting the urgent need for additional space to support the future expansion of one of Maharashtra’s largest government-run healthcare institutions.
In a letter dated June 9, 2026, Deora forwarded a representation submitted by the Dean of Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, urging the Deputy Chief Minister to consider the land transfer in the larger public interest. The proposal comes at a time when the hospital is witnessing growing demand for specialised treatment, medical education and research facilities.
“J.J. Hospital is one of Maharashtra’s premier public healthcare institutions, serving thousands of patients daily from across the State and the country. With the upcoming super-speciality hospital nearing completion and the increasing demand for advanced healthcare services, medical education, and research infrastructure, the availability of additional land has become a pressing necessity,” Deora stated in his letter.
The proposed expansion plan includes the development of a dedicated palliative cancer hospital, a bone marrow transplant centre, advanced research and training facilities, student hostels, residential accommodation for staff and support amenities for families accompanying patients.
According to Deora, the additional infrastructure would help ease pressure on the existing hospital campus while improving access to affordable and specialised healthcare for patients travelling to Mumbai from across Maharashtra.
The MP sought Shinde’s “kind intervention and support” for the initiative, emphasising its potential to enhance patient care, medical research and healthcare education. If approved, the transfer of the Richardson & Cruddas land could pave the way for one of the most significant expansions of the JJ Hospital campus in recent years, substantially boosting the capacity of Mumbai’s public healthcare system.
