Mumbai’s Coastal Road project is set to achieve a major milestone with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiating work on the final missing stretch of the seafront promenade in Worli. Once completed, the project will create an uninterrupted 7.5-kilometre waterfront corridor for pedestrians and cyclists along the city’s western coastline.
To bridge the remaining gap, the civic body plans to award a contract worth Rs 12.15 crore for the construction of a 320-metre-long and 8-metre-wide promenade-cum-access road between Lotus Jetty and Samudra Mahal near Baroda Palace.
According to civic officials, the project is expected to be completed within six months, despite the ongoing monsoon season. The tender process reportedly attracted a single bidder, Forcon Infra Pvt Ltd, which is likely to be awarded the contract.
The proposed link will connect the existing promenade stretch running from Priyadarshini Park to Lotus Jetty, eliminating the final discontinuity in the waterfront pathway. Once operational, the route is expected to significantly enhance accessibility for walkers, joggers and cyclists while expanding public access to the reclaimed coastline.
In addition to recreational use, the new stretch will also serve practical functions. Plans include a carriageway that can be used by emergency and service vehicles, ensuring better operational access to the area. The corridor will provide connectivity to a proposed police outpost and a fire brigade facility near Samudra Mahal, strengthening emergency response infrastructure along the coastal belt.
The project is also expected to improve local connectivity for residents of nearby neighbourhoods, including Samudra Mahal, Poonam Chambers and Shivsagar Estate.
Urban planning experts view the development as part of a broader effort to integrate transport infrastructure with public open spaces. By combining recreational amenities with emergency access and civic facilities, the final Worli link is expected to enhance both the functionality and long-term public value of the Coastal Road corridor.
With the completion of this final section, Mumbai’s landmark Coastal Road project will move closer to delivering a continuous and accessible waterfront experience for residents and visitors alike.
