The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed that the reconstruction of the Sion East-West Railway flyover be completed by July 15, 2026, while also imposing strict deadlines on road excavation and concretisation works across Mumbai ahead of the monsoon season.
The directives were issued by Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide during a review of key infrastructure projects across the city. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar accompanied her during the inspections.
During her visit to the Dharavi sewage treatment plant (STP), Bhide reviewed progress on the 418 million litres per day (MLD) facility, which has achieved nearly 65% physical completion. Scheduled to become operational by July 2027, the project is part of Mumbai’s broader sewage treatment upgrade programme. Built using Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, the multi-storey facility has been designed to maximise efficiency in a space-constrained urban environment. Officials were instructed to resolve local issues promptly to keep the project on schedule.
At the Sion flyover site, officials informed the Commissioner that girder launching work had been delayed by approximately 15 days due to railway-related constraints. The installation, originally planned for April 30, is now expected to be completed by May 15. Despite the setback, Bhide directed agencies to expedite the remaining work and ensure both girders are installed by May 31. She also called for close coordination between the BMC Bridge Department and railway authorities to meet the July 15 completion target.
The Commissioner also reiterated strict timelines for Mumbai’s ongoing road concretisation programme. Under Phase 1 and Phase 2, a total of 1,736 roads covering 496.83 km had been completed as of April 13, 2026. Bhide instructed that no new road excavation work should commence after April 30, all concreting activities must conclude by May 15, and every road should be reopened to traffic by May 31.
Flood mitigation measures were also reviewed at Chunabhatti Railway Station, where Bhide assessed drainage infrastructure and proposed upgrades to pumping and stormwater management systems aimed at preventing waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season. She further directed officials to ensure transparency and quality in desilting operations and evaluate plans to strengthen drainage capacity in the area.
