CM Fadnavis Reviews Versova-Dahisar Coastal Road Work, Sets 2028 Deadline

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday reviewed the ongoing construction of the Versova-Dahisar section of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, a key component of the city’s long-term transport infrastructure plan aimed at improving connectivity along the western corridor.

During his site inspection, Fadnavis said the entire Coastal Road project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Addressing reporters, he noted that the project is designed to ease traffic congestion across Mumbai by creating an alternative high-capacity route parallel to the heavily burdened Western Express Highway.

“This will provide great relief to Mumbai. 60 per cent of Mumbai’s traffic goes directly via the Western Expressway, and to reduce the pressure on it, we are preparing a signal-free road from Nariman Point to Bhayandar. Our effort is that this entire project will be completed by October-November or December 2028,” said CM Fadnavis.

The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 29.2-kilometre, eight-lane, toll-free expressway being developed along the city’s western coastline, connecting Marine Lines to Kandivali, with future extensions planned up to Bhayandar. Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time across the stretch from more than two hours to approximately 40 minutes.

Earlier this year, Fadnavis inaugurated the ‘Melody Road’ section between Amarsons Garden and Breach Candy on the Dharmaveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South). The stretch features specially designed rumble strips that play the Oscar-winning song Jai Ho when vehicles pass over them.

The concept, based on Hungarian technology, is among only a handful of such installations globally. According to Hungarian Consul General Ferenc Jari, the initiative was introduced after an Indian businessman experienced a melody road in Hungary and proposed implementing a similar concept in Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation subsequently identified the coastal road stretch for the installation.
