The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed a key engineering milestone for the Mumbai Metro Line 2B project with the successful installation of its first composite steel span across the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel route.
The operation was executed during a tightly scheduled two-hour railway block earlier this week. The steel structure, measuring 54.25 metres in length, comprises four composite steel girders with a combined weight of 252 metric tonnes. The span was positioned over active railway tracks between 1 am and 3 am following detailed planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities.
To carry out the complex lift, project teams deployed two 500-metric-tonne hydraulic cranes operating in tandem mode. A standby crane was also stationed at the site to ensure additional safety during the operation. The launch was conducted under stringent safety and quality protocols and involved around 130 personnel, including 30 engineers and technical specialists along with 100 skilled and unskilled workers.
According to MMRDA, all statutory clearances and railway block permissions were secured before the commencement of the work. The authority stated that the successful installation was achieved through detailed engineering design, precision fabrication, rigorous quality checks and coordinated on-site execution.
Metro Line 2B is one of Mumbai’s major metro infrastructure projects and will connect DN Nagar, Bandra, Kurla, Mankhurd and Mandale. The corridor is expected to improve east-west connectivity across the city while reducing travel times for commuters. Once operational, the line will also enhance integration with existing suburban rail and metro networks, contributing to a more connected public transportation system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
MMRDA acknowledged the cooperation extended by Central Railway and other participating agencies, noting that their support played an important role in the successful completion of the technically challenging operation. The achievement is expected to accelerate progress on the Metro Line 2B corridor, a key component of Mumbai’s expanding urban transit network.
